Empowering farmers

The climate crisis is changing the rules of the game for agriculture – and for farmers. If we want to continue to feed the world with nutritional food while also protecting the planet, then we need to support farmers. Farmers are in the driver’s seat. They hold the key to the solution. When farmers succeed, everyone succeeds. Yara is developing a range of initiatives to help farmers improve their farm's sustainability beginning with our Farm to Fork strategy.

"In this journey, we believe that farmers are key and Yara is a partner they can count on to produce food in Europe in the most sustainable way."

Spearheading a more sustainable food system

The world needs to grow 40 percent more food by 2050 using less land, optimising yields, and emitting fewer greenhouse gas emissions. That means changing the way we treat our land, grow our crops, and produce our food. The European Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy put Europe as a frontrunner in transforming the global food industry by setting several aspirational goals to make our food system fair, healthy and environmentally friendly. For these aspirations to become a reality, the entire food chain must collaborate. We will play our part by capitalising on our knowledge of crop nutrition, farmers and markets to develop innovative solutions that also benefit society, just as we have for over a century. We’re ready to put Farm to Fork into action.

Putting Farm to Fork into action

As guardians of the soil, farmers have passed on to future generations knowledge of how to nurture the land they farm. By supporting farmers with digital tools and advice on smart, sustainable farming practices, we can help them further optimise crop yields, produce healthier crops and protect the soil, while also reducing their carbon footprint. This will benefit not only farmers but also the entire food value chain – from consumers who want access to healthy and sustainable food to food companies meeting consumer needs and their own climate pledges. The good news is that farmers are embracing new technologies and new ways of farming – and many solutions for achieving Farm to Fork already exist. A holistic approach is the best way forward:

Farmers can reduce emissions by storing CO2 in soils – and get paid for it. Through the Agoro Carbon Alliance, farmers will earn money for their carbon crop while tapping into valuable new markets where conscious consumers reward responsible agricultural choices.

Yara's sustainability commitment

Reducing agriculture’s impact on the environment is something Yara is passionate about. We are working with farmers and our partners along the value chain to find ways to improve agricultural production and make it more sustainable.

Sustainability-commitment---Energy-efficiency.png Energy efficiency. 90% of Yara’s total energy use comes from ammonia production. Recent upgrades to the majority of our plants have placed us among the most energy-efficient in the industry.
Sustainability-commitment---Water-conservation.png Water conservation. Our research and development teams are dedicated to finding out how to provide optimum nutrition to plants with limited water availability.
Sustainability-commitment---Climate-commitment.png Climate commitment. Yara has a leading industry position on greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement and climate-smart agriculture. We have cut our GHG emissions by half since 2004 and can reduce the carbon footprint of crop production significantly.
Sustainability-commitment---Green-nitrates.png Green nitrates. Yara has committed to be carbon neutral by 2050. In conjunction with a leading food chain company, we will supply green (none fossil fuel-based) nitrogen by 2023.
